However, they are great to use in your garden since you can buy them in about every size. The John Deere Company was founded in 1837 by a blacksmith in Grand Detour, Illinois. There were a lot of problems for the farmers tilling the ground, which was tough, prairie soil along with sticky clay. They could not get their cast iron plows through this tough, sticky ground. Well, there was a need and Deere came up with the solution. He perfected the self-scouring steel plow which was constructed from highly polished steel and with a perfectly shaped moldboard. This plow was so successful, that Deere was invited to go into business with a partner in 1843, speeding up production. In 1848, he moved the company to Moline, Illinois, the hub of transportation, right on the banks of the great Mississippi River. He had then manufactured 10,000 plows. Then, in 1868, the business took on the of the name of the John Deere Company. He had many partners up to that point, all along stressing that the company would only produce quality products. Deere's son Charles, later became the director of John Deer Tractors, which has continued to grow into the magnificent company we know of today.
